Working Together

First steps ...

Starting therapy can feel daunting - I suggest beginning with a free 15–20 minute phone call. This gives you the chance to tell me a little about what you’re looking for, ask any initial questions, get a sense of me and my approach and a feel for whether I might be the right person to help.

What's next?

If you’d like to take the next step, we’ll book a 50-minute first session. In this appointment, we’ll explore in more detail what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. I’ll ask you some questions about yourself, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask me about the therapeutic process. This first meeting is about us getting to know one another — with no obligation to continue — and beginning to see what it might feel like to work together. If we both decide to go forward, we’ll agree a regular weekly time to meet.

How Long?

Some clients prefer to start with a relatively short block of sessions (typically 12 to 16) to address a specific concern and to experience how therapy feels. Others choose open-ended work from the outset, which allows more space for deeper exploration and reflection. There is no single “right” way to approach therapy. Together we’ll find the structure and pace that feels most supportive for you.

Ending therapy is an important part of the process. In time-limited work, we know in advance when our sessions will finish and can use the last meetings to reflect on your progress. In open-ended therapy, we would usually allow 4–6 weeks to bring our work to a close in a thoughtful and supportive way
